ARBOR DAY 2006 Arbor Day was celebrated in Grangeville, Idaho on Friday April 28th.
IDAHO’S CHAMPION TREE PROJECT The mission of the Champion Tree (ChampTree) Project International is to protect, propagate, and plant a living legacy of champion trees. The State of Idaho has the honor of being the first state to propose a statewide ChampTree program. Cities and towns that participate in the ChampTree program will have the distinction of carrying on the legacy of the old giants so that they may live into perpetuity. All of Idaho’s communities will have the opportunity to plant a ChampTree during the 2006 Arbor Day planting season. And what is a ChampTree? Champion trees are the largest documented living trees on record of particular species found in the United States. Research has been conducted to find the biggest and strongest tree of several different species, and it is from the seed of these giant trees that planting stock is being offered (1” to 1 ˝” caliper and 6-8’ tall trees) for planting in every village, town and city of our great State. The champion trees have been researched and authenticated by Champion Tree Program International (www.championtreeproject.org). Local Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) Councils and possibly other organizations will be the clearing house for ordering and delivery of the trees. All of the orders from around the state will be consolidated by the Clearwater RC&D office in Moscow. The planting stock will be delivered by a Lewiston, ID nursery to designated drop locations. Call the Clearwater RC&D office at (208-882-4960, ext. 102) to order or to request more detailed information. This project is being conducted in partnership with the Idaho RC&D Association, Idaho Department of Lands-Urban Community Forestry Program, local RC&D Councils, local Community Forestry Assistants and other cooperators.
